The Hillcrest Church of Christ is a body of people that meets on the first day of the week as instructed by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Under the leadership of the elders, all services are carried out in an orderly manner with only the scriptures as our guide. We also have a mid-week Bible study on Wednesday nights.
Background
We are part of "The Restoration Movement." Our goal is to "restore" the New Testament church in the present by following the example set forth in the Bible. We believe this is a worthy goal. We want to be a Bible-centered church and will strive to lay aside habit, tradition, and convenience to follow the authority of God's Word. That is our commitment.
Friendly The Church of Christ strives to be a "visitor friendly" church and we make it our goal to welcome you. Our aim is to treat others the way we want to be treated (Matthew 7:12). You will receive a warm greeting and be offered assistance to locate your class (or your children's). Our services are simple, reverent, practical, and meaningful.
Bible-based, Christ-Centered, Heaven-Bound
When you visit, you will meet people who, just like you, sincerely want to follow the teachings of the Bible and please God with their lives. You will find sermons and class lessons are based on the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16-17). In fact, members and visitors are urged to bring their own Bibles and follow along. We strive to simply follow the Word of God and to exalt Christ in our songs, prayers, sermons, and lives (Colossians 1:18). An air of hope fills the church as we think of the beautiful promise of Heaven for God's faithful children (Revelation 21).
Singing
The whole congregation sings acapella. That is, we sing without the accompaniment of musical instruments as they did in New Testament times (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). This is one of the unique things about true churches of Christ - and something you may find strange. This is a conviction with us, not just a preference. It has its root in our restoration heritage. We are seeking to worship according to the New Testament pattern.
Giving
If you visit on a Sunday morning, baskets will be passed to collect the weekly financial offering (I Corinthians 16:1-2). As our guest, you are not expected to make a donation. Feel perfectly comfortable in just passing the collection basket down the row.
Lord's Supper Observed Each Sunday
The church of Christ has communion on the first day of every week, just as they did in New Testament times (Acts 20:7, I Corinthians 11:23-28). It is a highlight of the week to be able to commemorate Christ's death and celebrate His promised return (Acts 1:10 - 11; I Thessalonians 4:15-18).
During this memorial, plates containing pieces of unleavened bread will be passed throughout the congregation. The bread symbolizes the body of Christ that was broken on the cross. Each participating person will break off a piece of this bread and eat it (Matthew 26:26).
Next, trays filled with small cups will be distributed containing the "fruit of the vine," grape juice, symbolizing the blood of Jesus. Each participant will drink the contents of one of these cups (Matthew 26:27 - 29).
If you choose not to participate, do not be embarrassed. Feel free to just pass the plate or tray to the person next to you.
"For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." I Corinthians 2:2
