The Bible teaches that God is aware of human beings before they are ever born. While theologians and scientists debate the moment a person has a soul, it appears that one is given a soul at the very moment of conception. Jeremiah 1:5 says, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations." Instead of a unborn child being described as a “fetus,” scripture describes it as a “baby” (Luke 1:41).
Instead of being a “thing,” scripture describes a baby as being created within its mother’s womb. This creation is primarily the work of God, and He is aware of that child prior to birth. Psalm 139:13-16 says, “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.” Lagard Smith summed it up best when he wrote,
From conception, the soul is coexistent with the nascent body. Instead of bodies having implanted souls, we are souls having human bodies. Hence, when our body dies, our soul lives on. Want to know what’s really going on here? When the pernicious notion of human evolution embeds itself in the cultural psyche, we are no more than soulless animals. There’s no divinely-created, eternity-bound soul to consider, only “My body, my choice!” Hear this, church!1
After Roe v. Wade was turned over by the Supreme Court, many in our nation believed that abortion would come to an end. The fact is many people do not understand what Roe did and did not do. Instead of banning abortions, it allowed individual states to determine whether or not abortions would be allowed and under what circumstances. Sadly, many states still allow abortions for any reason.
Another interesting thing many people do not realize is that abortions have increased since Roe based on a 2023 study conducted by the Guttmacher Institute. One article states, New findings from the Monthly Abortion Provision Study show that an estimated 1,037,000 abortions occurred in the formal health care system in 2023, the first full calendar year after the US Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned Roe v. Wade. This represents a rate of 15.9 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age,* and is a 11% increase since 2020, the last year for which comprehensive estimates are available. It is also the highest number and rate measured in the United States in over a decade.”2
The study indicated three reasons why abortions have increased. Telehealth care has provided greater access to mifepristone or the “abortion pill.” This has increased the number of abortions due to the Food and Drug Administration easing restrictions on the use of the abortion inducing drug. This drug has seen expanded use in areas that are rural where states have not outlawed abortions.
Another reason why abortions have increased is due to increased financial support. After Roe was struck down by the Supreme Court, the National Network of Abortion Funds reported a significant increase in the number of contributions to their fund after the Dobbs decision. However, contributions to the fund have decreased over time.
Finally, the Guttmacher Institute indicates that abortions have increased because states that allow abortions have provided greater protection and access to “care” for women seeking to terminate a pregnancy.
Perhaps more disturbing is the number of Americans who believe that abortions should be legal in every state without restrictions. A recent survey revealed the following statistics. The Pew Research Center states, In a Center survey conducted nearly a year after the Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision that ended the constitutional right to abortion, 62% of U.S. adults said the practice should be legal in all or most cases, while 36% said it should be illegal in all or most cases. Another survey conducted a few months before the decision showed that relatively few Americans take an absolutist view on the issue.3
It is sad to consider how human life is viewed in our society.
Other studies demonstrate the marital status and ethnic identity of women seeking abortions. Most women who had abortions in 2021 were single (87%). Whereas women who were married at the time of their abortion only accounted for thirteen percent of the abortions that were performed. This report was limited to thirty-seven states. Thirty-one states, New York City, and the District of Columbia reported that 42% of all women who had abortions in 2021 were Black, 30% were White, 22% were Hispanic and 6% were of another race. 4
Regardless of your political views, there are some things which should disturb Christians. During this year’s Democratic National Convention, Planned Parenthood is offering free abortions and vasectomies. The moral depravity of such an offering is unconscionable to people who believe in the sanctity of life. It is of no coincidence that this is being offered in conjunction with the Democratic National Convention.5 As of this writing, the appointments offered for vasectomies had been filled, but there seems to be no limit on the number of abortifacients that can be distributed during the convention.6
Instead of believing that the battle has been won regarding the plague of abortions we find throughout our land, we need to realize that the battle is still raging. Since Roe v. Wade has been overturned proponents of abortions have been out militantly protesting for “their rights” to kill unborn children. This is being done in the name of unlimited freedoms—even the freedom to abort a child whose only mistake was to be conceived by a parent who does not want it.
While proponents of abortion make arguments for abortion in cases of rape incest or to protect the health of the mother, most abortions are performed as an elective procedure (95.7%). Fewer than one percent of all abortions happened because of rape or incest (.4%).7 Three tenths of one percent are performed to preserve the health of the mother.8 As demonstrated by these statistics, most people have selfish reasons for wanting to abort their children.
What is the answer to this epidemic of aborting unwanted children? People need to wait until they are biblically married before engaging in sexual activity (Hebrews 13:3; I Corinthians 7:1-2). After marriage, children can be brought into the family (cf. I Timothy 5:14). This would solve about 95.7% of all reasons for abortion.

And that is now the Democratic Party Planned Parenthood actually put it out. Not only are they offering free abortions and the vasectomies of the DNC, but they said they've like maxed out of appointments apparently for the vasectomies, and they said we've got unlimited however, medical abortions, medication abortion. Uh so, just keep on coming, ladies with your babies. The DNC come with a child and leave without one. That's sick…”
